Energy and Water Efficient Products Get Sales Tax Holiday in Georgia

Earlier this year, the Governor and General Assembly renewed the annual sales tax holiday for energy and water efficient products. Starting Thursday, October 1 until Sunday, October 4, 2009, the following products that have been designated as “Energy Star” will be exempt from sales tax:

  • air conditioners
  • fluorescent light bulbs
  • dishwashers
  • refrigerators
  • dehumidifiers
  • ceiling fans
  • clothes washers
  • windows (including skylights)
  • programmable thermostats
  • doors

The following water efficient products will also be exempt from sales tax:

  • bathroom sink faucets or aerators
  • high-efficiency toilets
  • flushing urinals

The exemption applies to products costing $1,500 or less that are intended for home or personal use. For more information about the holiday, visit the Georgia Department of Revenue website. If you specific questions, refer to the answers to frequently asked questions here or contact the Taxpayer Services Division at 404-417-6601 or taxpayer.services@dor.ga.gov.

Since state revenues have declined significantly over the last eighteen months, forcing tough budgetary decisions, this may be the last year of the sales tax holiday.
